DR. SHANKAR GUNARASA

Dr. Shankar Gunarasa is a Board Certified General Surgeon & Consultant Colorectal who practices at Pantai Hospital Ayer Keroh, Melaka. Specializing in general surgery and advanced colorectal surgery, his areas of interest are focused on the treatment of colorectal diseases using minimally invasive surgery.
Dr. Shankar has sharpened his skills locally as well as internationally with training in Vienna and Bangkok, to name a few. His extensive experience enables him to offer the finest care in specific colorectal conditions such as perianal fistula, benign and malignant conditions in the colon and rectum, hernia, fecal incontinence and rectal prolapse.
In addition to his expertise in the treatment of colorectal diseases, Dr. Shankar is also an experienced surgeon in acute and chronic surgical procedures such as trauma and emergency, benign and malignant conditions of the thyroid and breast as well as endoscopy.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Dr Shankar completed his basic medical training with a Bachelors of Medicine & Bachelors in Surgery (MBBS) from Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal in 1999 and went on to obtain his Masters in Surgery (MSurg) from University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in 2008.
He completed his housemanship training at Hospital Pulau Pinang and later served as a Surgical Medical Officer at Hospital Bukit Mertajam and Hospital Seberang Jaya until 2004. Thereafter, he trained as a Clinical Specialist and was gazetted as a General Surgeon, serving at Hospital Sungai Buloh until 2010. He then continued practice as a General Surgeon at Hospital Tuanku Ampuan Rahimah Klang until 2012.
From 2013 to 2016, Dr Shankar pursued his Fellowship training in Colorectal Surgery at Hospital Selayang, Hospital Tuanku Jaafar, Seremban, University Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre, University Malaya Medical Centre and King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand.
Since 2016, Dr Shankar has served as a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at Hospital Tuanku Jaafar, Seremban and is a Visiting Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Hospital Port Dickson and Hospital Melaka.


TEACHING & ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE
Devoting considerable time to teaching and mentoring, Dr Shankar serves as the Adjunct Lecturer for Clinical Surgery for the Perdana University based at Hospital Tuanku Jaafar, Seremban. In 2018 and 2017, Dr Shankar was the invited examiner for the final MB, MChe, BAO Examination of PU-RCSI. He was the Honorary Lecturer for Management and Science University (MSU) in 2010 and University Technology Mara (UiTM) in 2009.
Dr Shankar’s commitment to imparting knowledge and expertise is evidenced by the numerous workshops he has organized and facilitated in hospitals, (notably the Stoma Workshop, Bowel Anastamosis Worskshop, Basic Surgical Workshops and Fistula Workshops), lectures and talks on General and Colorectal Surgery at hospitals, universities and for the Malaysian Medical Association.
